المستخلص Food is a basic necessity for the human life. Demand for rcx1 represents danand for basic need and is associated with human health, and productivity. It has been estimated, in Egypt, that expenditure for food consumption represents the major item in the consumer expenditure pattern. The percentage of food expenditure has been estimated at 51 per— cent in the urban sector and at 62 percent in rural sector. It is important to shed lights on the problems associated with the continious and significanu increases in the annual food consumption especially when the rate of increase in food consumption exceeds the rate of food production increase. The increase in food consumption is due to population increase and income increase. As a result, a signif— icant and increasing gap between demand for and supply of food is developing in Egypt. Other implications of the same phenomena are unbalanced consumption expenditure patterns, food price increases, decreasing purchasing power of a wide sector of consumers. At the macro—level this is translated into decreasing savings and investment patterns and eventually adverse effect on national economic planning schemes / |
