Abstract These results show that: - Lactic acid seems to be protective rather than a causal factor in fatigue evidenced by marked acceleration of fatigue when lactic acid level was significantly reduced as it occurred in diabetic groups. –The protective effect of lactate on muscle performance could be achieved by counteracting the depressant effect of elevated K+ concentration on muscle excitability and force. – Glycogen availability is critical for maintaining adequate muscle performance and glycogen depletion proved to accelerate the onset of fatigue as it occurred in diabetic rats |
