Abstract

Alcohol abuse is one of the most common causes of chronic liver diseases in the world. Several hundreds of plants have been examined for use in a wide variety of liver disorders; include Eruca sativa which have several biological activities including anticarcinogenic, antifungal, antibacterial and antioxidant effects. The present study
aimed to investigate the effect of petroleum ether extract of seeds (oil) and ethanolic extract of leaves & seeds of Eruca sativa in ethanol induced liver injury in rats.
Rats were divided into eleven groups; group I received saline, group II received ethanol daily for one month; group III received petroleum ether extract of seeds (oil) of Eruca sativa daily for three months, group IV received ethanol at the same time with petroleum ether extract of seeds (oil)
daily for one month; group V received ethanol for one month then petroleum ether extract of seeds (oil) daily for three months; group VI received ethanolic extract of seeds of Eruca
sativa daily for three months; group VII received ethanol at the same time with ethanolic extract of seeds daily for one month ; group VIII received ethanol for one month then ethanolic extract of seeds daily for three months; group IX received ethanolic extract of leaves of Eruca sativa daily for three months; group X received ethanol at the same time with ethanolic extract of leaves daily for one month; group XI received ethanol for one month then ethanolic extract of leaves daily for three months.
Animal sera were collected and used to determine liver function tests, lipid profile and oxidants/antioxidants
profile. Also, histopathological investigations of liver sections of rats were studied.
The results indicated that the prophylactic study improved serum hepatic function tests; lipid profile and oxidants/antioxidants profile compared to ethanol group.
The ethanolic extract of leaves of Eruca sativa in prophylactic groups showed the maximum improvement.
Also, ethanolic extract of seeds showed the maximum improvement in treated groups. Histopathological examination showed a damaging effect, necrosis and fibrosis of liver cells after ethanol induction and a marked improvement was seen in prophylactic groups especially leaf prophylactic group. Also, seed treated group improved the damaging effect of ethanol on liver but with mild degree.
These results proved the potent antioxidant activity of Eruca sativa extracts.
