Abstract Aim of the work To compare the clinical efficacy of a metered dose inhaler with home-made spacer to that of Jet nebulizer, in bronchodilator treatment of children suffering from chronic severe bronchial asthma in wheezing crises using salbutamol in a randomized clinical trial. Conclusion and recommendation We conclude that metered dose inhalers with home made spacers are equally effective as nebulizers in treatment of acute exacerbation of bronchial asthma in children suffering from chronic severe bronchial asthma. Also, we concluded that the dose salbutamol producing the same clinical improvement and the same urine concentration for every 100μg from the metered dose inhalers plus spacers equals to 2.19 to 2.39 mg of salbutamol by nebulizers which means that less drug used and less side effects. We recommended that all mother and care takers of children suffering from chronic severe bronchial asthma with acute exacerbation to use the metered dose inhalers with commercial spacers or with home made spacers in acute asthmatic exacerbation of those children instead of nebulizers. |
