Abstract

Extraction and Separation of Metal Ions Using Silica Gel Bound Organic Chelating Agents”
This thesis compnses three malll chapters. The first one is
Illroductioll. It includes a literature survey on the general characteristics f silica, its bulk and surface. structure. Advantages of silica gel as 1l00gallic solid support. Modification of silica gel surface using silylating gents. Different methods used for the immobilization of organic helating agents to silica gel modified surface. Also, introduction lcludes the use of these silica gels bound organic complexing agents, as olid phase extractors for selective extraction, preconcentration and/or eparation of metal ions present in aqueous media. In addition to the lOre advanced applications as stationary phases for metal ion etennination by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and n chromatography techniques. As well as flow injection (FI) on-line reconcentratioll, separation and determination of metal ions.
The second chapter is experimental; this chapter describes the processing and details of the analytical methods used throughout the hesis and it includes the following items:
Materials and instrumentation used (lR, Flame Photometer, Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer and Cold Vapor Atomic Absorption Spectrop h oto meter).
Preparation of solutions (i.e., metal ions, buffer, EDT A).
• The synthetic routes for the new silica gel phases.
• Determination of surface coverage.
