Abstract

During the past 40 years the mental hospital population of many countries has been greatly reduced but development of alternative facilities has not been enough to replace all the functions of the old institutions 60.
The advocate of deinstitutionalization appears convinced that community care avoids the evil of institutionalization while de-institutionalization has been accompanied by a pattern of frequent relapse and re-admission.
Reducing relapse rate requires knowing the factors that influence relapse it also requires knowing how to recognize early signs of relapse.
The aim of the present study is to identify factors affecting re-hospitalization of schizophrenic patient.
The study was carried out at Tanta mental health hospital.
The sample consists of 50 schizophrenic patients and 50 caretaker’s one for each patient and they represent the family member who is taking care of the patient at home.
Data were collected by an interview schedule which covered the following aspects; aspects related to the patient and his illness aspects related to family atmosphere and situation aspects related to the hospital and aspects related society attitudes.
