Abstract

In this thesis a comperehensive study for the axial vib¬ration evaluation in marine shafting system has been underta¬1-,cn, particularly for those associated with large tanker shaf¬ting system. An analytical method.i;j also developed for predic¬ting the performance charactoristics before hand for t1iose type of ships.
The thesis is divided into five chapter in addition to a 6oneral introduction as well as some remarks and, conclusiolis Chapter I points out to the recent trend towards adopting high powers for the propulsion of large tankers. However, a cc=ssponding increase in ship’s speed has not been undertaken. Such large tankers are gathered into two groups ; the first includes the medium sized vessels between 100,000 and 150,000 6wt, meanwhile the second includes the real very large crude carries ” VLCCS ” between 200,000 and 250,000 dwt. consequently,the large tankers considered in this study. namely, from 100,000 to 300,000 Ton dwt represent the most modern trend. This is why this category of ship’s is choosen in connexion with this study .
In chanter II. reference is made to the general arran-e¬ment consideration concerning the location of propeller with all its aperature clearances as well as the main engine loca¬tion. The different types of loadings initiated as a resuls of the work of marine propellers, was clearly illustrated. The methods adopting for calculating the consequent unsteady forces
