Abstract
It has been established that mass transfer in a Packed COlunul during absorption is enhanced by Pulsations. As the first phase of a program directed towards developing a better understanding of the effect of pulsations on mass transfer, this work is primarily concerned with a study of the hydrOdy¬namics of packed COlUUITW with imposed Pulsations. This work concentrates more on determining the effect of such Pulsation on the pre SSlU’e drop within the colurrm-.
An increase in the pressure drop will be aocompanied by an increase in the mass transfer coef:ficient. However, an
unlimited incroase of the pressure drop Would not be practi¬cal as well as being uneconomical if we consider that the power needed to pass the fluids through the packed column ls the product of the pre ssure drop and thc volume tric flow rate of fluids. It will be therefore obvious that the pressure needed to Pass the fluids through i;he colunm can be oonsidered economical only i:f a high rate o:f mass transfer results. In other words. we must considor both the valus of the pressure drop and the rate of mass transfer obtained. If we are able to obtain a high mass transfer with as little expended power t 0 give Us the ne ce ss ary pre s sure drop, the n we Would have the ideal situation.
In this work, the effect of tl~ gas flow rate, the liquid
