Abstract Prosopis juliflora (SW) DC (mesquite) family Mimosaceae is a deciduous tree, spiny growing abundantly throughout tropical and subtropical regions. The genus prosopis is widely used in folk medicine because it is rich in sugars, tannins, flavonoids and alkaloids which have antibiotic action. Literature survey showed that nothing could be traced concerning prosopis juliflora (SW) DC cultivated in Egypt except few notes about taxonomical characters and phytochemical study on the pods, this stimulates the present work which includes: Part I : Botanical study. Macro- and micromorphology of the organs of the plant under investigation in both entire and powdered forms. Part II: Phytochemical study. 1- Preliminary phytochemical screening of the different constituents. 2-Isolation and identification of the flavonoids, alkaliods, carbohycrates and lipids to elucidate their chemical structure. Part III: Biological Study . 1-Preliminary antibacterial study of different extacts of the leaves. 2-Pharmacological activities of different extacts of the leaves. 3-Toxicological effects of different extracts of the leaves. |
