Abstract The 150 of the staff members of faculty of medicine, Ain Shams University were surveyed for a study on their smoking habits and their attitudes towards smoking. From that survey the following were obtained: Most of them their age ranging from 30 to 40 years. All of them are males. Most of them are married with duration of marriage about 10-20 years. The preferred type of smoking is cigarette smoking. Most of them started smoking during college especially during the last years. The most common cause of starting smoking is peer pressure. The clinician’s smokers are more than academics. Their work increases their smoking rate. Most of them used to smoke a cigarette before doing operation or procedure. Most of them can stop smoking in smoking free places and can work in smoking free hospitals. Most of them had a bad opinion about smokers. Most of them did not even try to quit smoking. Their monthly income was not affected by smoking. Most of them reported that they had no health problems due to smoking. Family pressure is the most common cause of stopping smoking. Most of the quitters did it suddenly not depending on any plans or programmes. |
