Abstract
Skin affections in broilers are important factors which cause high rate of economic losses due to condemnation of the carcasses at slaughter. There are some important skin affections which effect seriously on industry of poultry such as fowl pox disease, Marek’s disease, gangrenous dermatitis, contact dermatitis, staphylococcosis
(bumble foot), fowl mites, Favus, xanthomatosis and cannibalism.
Between January 2005 to November 2007 from different flocks, breeds, ages, sexes and localities in Sharkia Govemorate, Specimens from skin lesions were randomly collected which are mainly of non-
feathered parts of the body as comb, wattles, inner surface of the
wings, vent area and legs. The chickens were subjected to clinical
signs and pathological examination. Embryonated chicken eggs were
used for detection of pock lesions on the chorioallantoic membranes
(CAMs) to confirm diagnosis of fowl pox. The skin lesions were described grossly and specimens from
such lesions were collected fixed in 100/0 neutral buffered formalin
solution and processed routinely for pathological examination. Five-
micron thick paraffin sections were prepared and stained by Hematoxylin and Eosin besides the PAS-reaction for fungi and then examined microscopically. Thirty, 11 day-old embryonated chicken eggs were used to
confirm the disease on the chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) with
O.2ml suspension of the affected tissue. After 5 days the embryos were
examined for the deaths and plaque formation on the CAM.
