‎Recreational Buildings And External Spaces For Children (School Theatre - School Play Areas)
‎ABSTRACT:
‎Childhood is considered to be the most important stage in man’s life. The compatibility
‎effeciency of man either with his natural or social environment is determined according to the expreiences and behaviors gained in his childhood. So, achieving the proper blanced development for the child should drive the whole attention and care.
‎Children form almost one third of the world population, and according to this all the
‎world governments direct their interest towards the upgrading of childhood as the only promising foundation of the future building and as a measure of the cultural progress of the society. To achieve this aim, psychological and pedgogical researches have been coming out since the last half of the twentieth century concentrating on studying the different
‎development needs for childhood.
‎The primary school is the first disciplinary educational establishment that receives the
‎six years child. All the effects that child faces in tlris school govern his future general personality composition. This shows the importance of designing the primary school as his most pleassant, beautiful and preferable environment in which the clrild stays for a long time daily and for five years, enjoying different reactions with the elements of this environment. These elements should stimulate his intellectual, creative and social abilities and enrich lris sense of beauty. This reaction occures through the ”Rereational Activities” or” Play”, which is classified to : the Physical Activities (Free play - Play With Equipments- Sports), Performance Activities (Acting - Fine Arts - Dance) and Environmental Activities
‎(Exploratory Activities - Camping).
‎Due to some factors such as bad design and planning , in addition to the present
‎educational system directions, the Egyptian primary school, in most of its cases, is disabled to fulfill its recreational function either througth its recreational building (school theatre) or its external recreational spaces (school play areas). So, instead ofaclrieving the pedagogical aims, the primary school in this way causes the deterioration of both of the health, physical, social, intellectual and psychological state of the child. Accordingly, the child may be
‎directed towards misbehaviour in the society.
‎In the field of ’The Architectural And Environmental Studies’, this thesis concerns
‎about the ability of both of the theatre and play areas to fulfill the recreational function, which insures that the primary school, or the” Educational Environment” can achieve its
‎pedagogical aims.
‎The Objectives:
‎Through the functional design study of both of the theatre and the play areas in the
‎primary school environment , which ensure the upgrading ofthe Egyptian child, this thesis
‎aims to the upgrading of the Egyptian society in all fields.
‎The thesis is de\;ded into three volums as Follows:
‎Volume 1 : Elementary Theoritical Studies On Child ern :
‎This volume includes studies of childem psychology concerning the different signs of ..I~.,~I~.”,,., •• ,.,t (nlw<:ical. motor. sensory, intellectual and social) . In this part ,the study makes focus on the historical background of recreaction for the Egyptian child as well as the lastest governmental done efforts in this field. In the end of the volume, the study has pointed to both of the historical background and the design considerations to be taken in the types of receational buildings and external spaces either outside school (Amusement Parks, Children’s Cinema, Children’s Theatre, Circus, Childern Camps And Playgrounds ) or within the school site (School Theatre And Play Areas).
‎Volume 2 : The Recreational Buildings And External Spaces within The School Site, The Theoritical Studies:
‎This volume is concerned with the architectural studies of the theatre building and the external play areas within the primary school site, The volume has two parts :
‎Part 1 :The Recreational Building {School Theatre) :
‎The architecural design criteria and considerations for the building are defined in this part as : Planning considerations for the building relation with the school site, architectural design considerations [for the spaces of audience (Childern), actors, musicians and theatre technicians] and this’s in addition to the constructional and finishing considerations. Then, the design considerations of the school multi-purpose hall as an alternative to the school theatre take place in the end of this part,
‎Part 2 : The Recreational External Space (School Play Areas) :
‎The design criteria and considerations for the school play areas as a main recreantional element in the educational environment are defined in this part as : Architectural design considerations for the relation of play areas with the school site, climatic factors protections, the relation of play areas with the surrounding buildings, play areas service elements, child human scale and the existence of beautiful enclosures as well as the constructional and finishing considerations.
‎Both of the two parts ends with a design analysis to examples of both of the schoo! theatre and play areas in the Foreign, Arabic Countries and Egypt.
‎Volume 3 : Field Study On The School Theatre And Play Areas Within Alexandria Governorate:
‎This volume’s concerned with a study aiming to evaluate the carrying out of the architectural criteria and considerations in samples of elementary schools representing the six educational zones of Alexandria (}vIontazah, East, Middle, West, EI-Gomrok and El¬Amriah). This’s followed by an analysis and compartive study concerning the school theatre and play areas in the range of the six educational zones and Alexandria govrenorate, These studies lead to the conclusions and the end of the thesis which comes out with the suggested recommendations aiming to achieve the proper balanced development to our child through his educational environment.
