Abstract Acute cerebrospinal meningitis remains a major problem in the developing countries, unless early reliable diagnosis and proper therapy are instituted, mortality and long term neurological sequelae may occur. The aim of the study is to test the reliability of CSF TNF-α and ferritin in the early diagnosis of meningitis and differentiation between septic and viral meningitis. This work included 40 patients with ages ranged between 6 months and 14 years with mean age (3.8±2.6). They were 65% males and 35% females. They were admitted with the clinical diagnosis of meningitis, to Abbassia Fever Hospital from November (2003) to February (2004). In addition to 10 patients their age ranged from 7 months to 10 years with mean of (5.3±4.1) with manifestations suggestive of meningitis but proved free by CSF examination served as a control group. |
