Abstract The research proposes a linguistic analysis of the language of dialogue in the Holy Quraan with the aim of coming up with the criteria to be used when translating this type of contexts. Analysis is limited to four domains: the language of wrathful threat and stubborn defiance in the dialogue between allah and liar blaspemers, the courteous language of mercy and compassion in the dialogue between Allah and the prophets&righteous, the language of compassion and patient persuasion as contrasted to the language of violence and stubborn denial in the dialogue between believers&blasphemers, and the tender language of mercy, affection, and contentedness in the dialogues of the righteous. Having exposed many different theories of translation in general and dialogue translation in particular, the study compared the selected dialogue contexts to the translations by Abdullah Yusif Ali(1998), Mr. and Mrs. Zidan(1979), and Arthur j.Arberry(2005), with the aim of finding out to what extend these translations were successful in transmitting the message with its full semantic and sentimental implications. Evaluation criteria could be summed up as the logical consequence of reason/ conclusion, lexical items and grammatical structures, vocative words, gambits, terms of endearment and aversion, and assertive words, the meaning of words in collocations, the non-segmental aspects of dialogue contexts, word order and sentence structure, and finally tenses and their semantic implications. |
