Abstract

The present thesis offers a graphical-analytical method for synthesizing spherical linkage mechanism capable to generate a function of two variables. The methodology used up herein to manage the problem is illustrated through two stages. The first stage, incorporated in Chapter I, is devoted to preparing geometric constructions associated with stereographic projections of small and great circles of a sphere onto a projection plane. Analytical
‎expressIons for each of these geometric constructions are derived on the projection plane.
‎These analytical expressions are used to formulate computer aided sol.ution on the projection. plane, then this solution is inversed to the surface of the sphere. In the second stage, these geometric constructions are exploited to develop a graphical-analytical method for synthesizing a spherical linkage mechanism with two rotating inputs and one rotating output. The method relies mainly on constructing circles passing through predefined points. On the other hand the mechanism has to satisfy six arbitrary selected design points. This has been done by using the stereographic projection which projects the mechanism from the surface of the sphere onto the plane. On this plane a proposed method is used to design the mechanism to satisfy the six arbitrary selected design points. Then the mechanism is inversed back to the sphere using the stereographic projection. An optimization technique, which is a combination
‎of what is known as ”Selective Precision Synthesis” technique and ”Hooke & Jeeves” direct
‎search technique, is used to minimize the output errors of the mechanism.
‎For computer aided solution, the proposed analytical method of synthesis and optimization technique are written as two computer programs using BASIC language.
