Abstract cardiac dysfunction This study was conducted on 35 patients with different causes of cardiac dysfunction were attending the PICU at children’s hospital Ain Shams University. The study included also 10 apparently healthy age and sex matched subjects as control group. The aim of this study was to estimate the level of glutathione peroxidase enzyme and the active part of it, which is the selenium in critically ill patients with cardiac dysfunction. The studied subjects were grouped according to cardiac dysfunction into: Group I: patients with Cardiomyopathy, Group II: patients with Toxic myocarditis, Group III: patients with Rheumatic carditis and a fourth group of normal subjects serving as control. All the studied groups were subjected to medical history taking, through clinical examination, chest x-ray, electrocardiogram, echocardiography and laboratory tests, which included the estimation of selenium and GSH-Px levels. The parameters were measured prior and after selenium supplementation to the studied groups. |
